April 3, 2008
 The Schubert Club - Courtroom Concert // Courtroom 317 // 12-1 pm // FREE
 Come hear astounding classical music at the weekly Courtroom Concerts, every   Thursday at noon.  Bring your bag lunch for  the event and The Schubert Club will provide the coffee. This week enjoy music from Jun Qian, clarinet and Aaron Wolff, cello. For more information call 651-292-3267.
 
 TRACES  - “German War Brides” German Lecture Series // Courtroom 430 // 1pm // FREE
 A Retrospective Author Annelee Woodstrom will explore the experiences of former "enemies" coming to live in the American Heartland after World War II. After offering summaries of her story and responding to initial questions, the audience will be free to pose their questions about this mostly forgotten sub-chapter of Midwest/WWII history.
 
 TRACES  - “One German War Bride’s Story” German Lecture Series // Courtroom 430 // 7pm //   FREE
 Author Annelee Woodstrom's autobiography War Child describes the Germany she knew as under Nazi dictatorship, and how meeting a Minnesota soldier at the war's end changed her life. When she arrived in Ada , Minnesota with her G.I. husband in 1947, she landed among a people recently  portrayed to her as "the enemy" speaking  almost no English. Now   releasing her second book, Empty Chairs, she will share more about that and related experiences in an informal setting.

 Spheres Opening Day, Woodturning Demonstrations// Gallery of Wood Art // 12 pm – 3   pm // FREE
More than 50 artists will create a galaxy of spheres in this very international exhibit at the Gallery of Wood Art. Despite  strict limits on the physical form (all pieces must be spherical and six inches in diameter at the largest) the variety of   interpretations and materials keeps the show lively and interesting. The exhibit draws on the talents of studio turners from New Zealand, South Africa, France, Germany, England, Ireland, and other far-flung places, as well as closer to home in  the US and Canada. These are artists at the top of the field, most with work in major museums and art collections. The exhibit runs from April 13 thru June 8.

Grace Flandrau, Voice Interrupted Book Signing by Georgia Ray // Courtroom 317 // 1 pm // FREE
Georgia Ray, author of Grace Flandrau - Voice Interrupted a biography.  Grace Flandrau was a contemporary of F. Scott    Fitzgerald, sharing both a hometown - Saint Paul , Minnesota - and an editor, the legendary Maxwell Perkins.  She wrote six  books - three of which were turned into movies - an more than four dozen stories. During her life, she was one of Minnesota 's    best-known writers.  And yet, she remain in history's shadows.  In this landmark biography, Gerogia Ray tells the story of a     remarkable author and explores Flandrau's fall from literary and social grace. Georgia Ray is a writer of local history and  biography. A graduate of Wellesley College , she served in the 1970s as executive director of Minnesota Landmarks, the   public foundation that saved the Old Federal Courts Building (now the Landmark Center ). As a writer, her work has appeared  in such publications as Minnesota History, Ramsey County History, Hennepin County History, and Downtowner. She has  published two articles on Flandrau­"Saving Grace" (Mlps St. Paul, February 1998) and "In Search of the Real Grace Flandrau (Minnesota History, Summer 1999). She edited Memoirs of Grace Flandrau, published by Knochaloe Beg Press in 2003.

Ordway Center and Landmark Center present “DANCEBREAK” // Cortile // 12- 1pm //FREE
Your next chance to dance at lunch is today, at the historic Landmark Center . Sole City will bring Rhythm Tap – the category of dance that encompasses the hoofing styles of current stars such as Savion Glover and the late Gregory Hines. And C Street Dancers will teach us Black Bottom dancing, the prototype for modern Tap dance phrasing. As always, performers will invite  any interested audience members to learn and dance with them.

Trial Reenactment of Alvin “Creepy” Karpis // Courtroom 317 // 7 pm // FREE
Infamous St. Paul Gangster Alvin “Creepy” Karpis will haunt the very place he was tried, in a Landmark Center Trial  Reenactment.   In a Walter Cronkite “You Are Here” segments the case unfolds as you hear from famous historical 
characters including Governor Floyd B. Olson, J. Edgar Hoover, the Barker gang, and more.  The reenactment of the 
historic trial of Alvin “Creepy” Karpis will take place in St. Paul’s historic Landmark Center on Wednesday, April 30 and 
Thursday May 1 (Law Day), 2008 at 7:00 p.m. in the Ramsey County Room (Courtroom 317). Former Minnesota
         Supreme Court Justice Esther Tomljanovich will deliver a welcome address, and join an  all-star cast of other prominent 
Minnesota jurists, legal practitioners and academicians who will trade robes for costumes in bringing this dramatic 
trial to life.  The re-enactment performance is free and open to the public.  A reception with the cast will immediately 
follow the performance. The Event is co-sponsored by William Mitchell College of Law.  For more information, call Minnesota
