Extended Hours September 1-5, Open Labor Day, Monday through Friday 9-5, and Thursday 9-8pm. Special Exhibit: Find out what happens when woodturning artists create practical items for everyday use at the American Association of Woodturners Gallery of Wood Art exhibit, Turned for Use II. From a mandolin to matched toilet plungers, jewelry boxes and bowls, the exhibit features a wide range of techniques and woods. Complementing and contrasting with the artist-made pieces will be historic examples of practical items known as treen. Treenware includes any lathe-made household item that is not furniture - bowls, rolling pins, mashers, juicers, etc. Though humble, the historic pieces have a grace and beauty all their own. From Freedom’s Shadow: African Americans and the United States Capitol will be visiting

from August 20 through September 28. The exhibit will be free and open to the public during building hours. The role of African Americans in the history of the United States Capitol has scarcely been a topic of discussion on public tours of the Capitol nor is it seen in the vast body of historical literature on the Capitol. Since 1962 the United States Capitol Historical Society, a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization, has preserved and promoted the history of the Capitol and Congress by providing educational programs and publications for the general public. The Society’s newest traveling exhibit, “From Freedom’s Shadow: African Americans and the United States Capitol,” is an effort to increase public awareness of this subject.
