Saint Paul, M N

The presence of the Federal Government has returned to Landmark Center with Uncle Sam Worked Here, a permanent, building-wide exhibition that chronicles the storied federal history of Landmark Center .

This coming November Minnesota Landmarks will begin a series of lectures that talk about the history of the U.S. Government's role, both in the country and in Landmark Center , as it relates to the newly installed exhibit "Uncle Sam Worked Here" in the building.  These talks will be preceded by an "Uncle Sam Worked Here" walking tour through the building which begins at 9:30 am. Complimentary Refreshments will be served at 10:30 am, followed by the lecture at 10:45 am.

On November 8th, Paul Maccabee will speak on "Ma Barker, John Dillinger and Me: Gangster, Gun Molls and G-Men." Maccabee, author of the crime history book “John Dillinger Slept Here: A Crooks’ Tour of Crime and Corruption in Saint Paul,” reveals the secrets of America’s most notorious outlaws Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, Babyface Nelson, John Dillinger, Ma Barker, “Machine Gun” Kelly and Bugsy Seigel all of whom lived in St. Paul during the Public Enemies era of the 1930s. Featured in three national A & E Cable TV specials and in the History Channel TV documentary “Crime Story,” Maccabee probed 100,000 pages of long-secret FBI files to unearth the hidden history behind the gangland trials in Landmark Center, the kidnapping of millionaires William Hamm and Edward Bremer and a rogue’s gallery of bank robbers, brothel owners, machine-gunners, hit men and bootleggers.

On November 15th, Paul Larson will give a talk related to the new exhibit and on “Indelible Imagery: The Federal Building in its St. Paul Setting.” November 22 Clifford E. Clark, Jr., Ph.D, will give a talk on "Prohibition's Legacy: Alcohol, Government Regulations and American Society."

The series will return in the Spring with new speakers and related topics.

Each of the talks will be in Courtroom 326 at 9:30am.  Although the lectures are free, you want to call 651-292-3276 to make your reservation.
