African American attorney William Francis-later the U.S. Ambassador to Liberia-and his civil rights activist wife\, Nellie\, planned to move from the Rondo neighborhood to a home on Sargent Ave. Their plans were met with petitions\, demonstrations\, death threats\, and eventually two separate cross burnings.
