The MSPIFF41 theme\, SHINE THROUGH\, invites us all to resume gathering in-person to enjoy more than 200 films from around the world and a full array of exciting parties\, panels\, and filmmaker networking events and discussions. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL HERE. \n \nFrida is a 40-year-old painting therapist who finds herself pregnant. When Felix\, her boyfriend\, (who hasn’t been her partner for very long)\, hears this\, he’s gone and back with his ex. What is Frida to do but launch a full-scale\, sometimes outlandish plan to keep him in her life? \nAfter a chance encounter and whirlwind romance between Frida and Felix results in a stunning pregnancy\, the two parents-to-be reevaluate their lives. For Felix\, this means hightailing it out of there. But for Frida\, it is a challenge–with the help of her friend\, a teenage neighbor\, she concocts plans to win Felix back that are at once clever and totally bonkers. Laura Lehmus’ bold use of color\, magical realism\, and a brilliant comic performance by Friederike Kempter make Sweet Disaster a genuine crowd pleaser.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL HERE. \nhttps://vimeo.com/502179891 \nIn this gripping drama inspired by real events\, an endangered musician in a Syrian town controlled by ISIS must sell his beloved piano in order to escape the country. The film marks the feature debut of Columbia University-trained\, Lebanese writer-director Jimmy Keyrouz and is an expansion of his 2016 Student Academy Award-winning short “Nocturne in Black.” Boasting a score by Keyrouz’s famous compatriot Gabriel Yared and a Cannes 2020 label designation\, the film combines real-life crisis\, potent emotion and an ending of stunning defiance. \nIn Sekka\, 20-something pianist Karim shares a bombed-out building with his cousin Maya\, and many other neighbors of assorted ages and occupations\, some of whom belong to an underground resistance opposing ISIS. Since playing or listening to music is one of many things forbidden by the extremist group\, Karim plans to pay a smuggler to get him to Europe\, where he hopes to fulfill his dream of performing with an orchestra.
