SUMMARY:MSP International Film Festival: Mija
DESCRIPTION:MSP Film Society presents the 41st Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF41) from Thursday\, May 5 through Thursday\, May 19\, 2022. The MSPIFF41 theme\, SHINE THROUGH\, invites us all to resume gathering in-person to enjoy more than 200 films from around the world and a full array of exciting parties\, panels\, and filmmaker networking events and discussions. Many MSPIFF41 films will also be available to screen virtually\, in keeping with MSP Film Society’s mission to increase audience access to these wonderful films. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL HERE. \n \nIndie music manager Doris Muñoz looks back on childhood experiences with her close-knit family and her early career launching the pop star\, Cuco. Being the first American-born member of her undocumented family means coming of age is complicated by the added responsibilities of green card processing and family reunification. In spite of the crushing pressures\, Doris hustles to find new musical talent amongst a community of children of immigrants for whom success is more than an individual dream\, it’s a collective lifeline. \nMija is an emotional and moving portrait of an ambitious young woman moving up in the music world while staying deeply connected to her parents as they struggle for secure permanent residency status\, financial stability\, and the freedom to safely visit their beloved family in Mexico. As the only family member who can traverse the border safely\, Mija represents the hope\, guilt\, and challenges of first generation youth.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL HERE. \n \nSam\, all of 17-years-old\, has been kicked out of boarding school. A spiraling student\, he’s suffering from a crushing depression brought on by the death of his mother. When his father brings him home\, there’s a surprise – his long-absent\, icy and reluctantly dependent grandmother Ruth (a spirited Charlotte Rampling) has moved in. \nSharp as a needle but as self-destructive (and perhaps self-delusional) as her grandson\, Ruth is trapped in a wheelchair\, needing someone to feed her\, listen to her\, and most importantly\, pour her enormous pitchers of gin. Slowly\, over time\, the pair begin to connect\, sharing their grief and their dreams\, and a genuine family\, warts and all\, begins to emerge. Matthew J. Saville’s smart\, touching dramedy is a tour de force for Rampling\, who meets her match in George Ferrier’s Sam.
