SUMMARY:History Play: War\, Resistance\, and Protest: The Trial of the “Minnesota 8”
DESCRIPTION:   \nWith an all-star cast of Twin Cities lawyers and judges\, 2023’s History Play takes place in 1970\, the year the anti-war movement intensified among college students who were protesting President Richard M. Nixon’s military efforts in Vietnam. On trial was the Minnesota 8\, students with connections to the University of Minnesota\, arrested for breaking into draft offices throughout the state in attempt to destroy draft records. \nLandmark Center’s History Play performance series is a theater program designed to bring to life many of the trials\, court decisions\, legal ramifications\, and other related events that were relevant to Landmark Center when it was the Federal Courts Building. Noted Twin Cities judges\, legal practitioners\, and academics often trade robes for costumes to bring the events to life. \nFind tickets here.

SUMMARY:History Play: Alvin Karpis: The Last Public Enemy #1
DESCRIPTION:Alvin “Creepy” Karpis was the last 1930’s gangster to be named Public Enemy #1 by the FBI; the last major gangster to be captured; the only person ever arrested by J. Edgar Hoover and the only gangster chained to a radiator “like an animal” in Landmark Center. The play explores the life of Alvin Karpis\, the Barker-Karpis gang and infamous kidnappings\, how corruption helped his gang to be so successful and how he was finally brought to face justice in the Federal Courthouse in St. Paul. \nLandmark Center’s History Play performance series is a theater program designed to bring to life many of the trials\, court decisions\, legal ramifications\, and other related events that were relevant to Landmark Center when it was the Federal Courts Building. SUMMARY:History Play: Obscenity On Trial: The Case Against Dr. Charles Malchow
DESCRIPTION:Please note we require all guests to present proof of either full COVID-19 vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result taken within 72 hours prior to attending.  \nHistory Plays return to Landmark Center this fall with “Obscenity On Trial: The Case Against Dr. Charles Malchow\,” written by Thomas Fabel. Set in 1904\, this production explores the repercussions of the Comstock Act of 1873\, which prohibited the use of U.S. Mail for any “obscene\, lewd\, lascivious\, immoral or indecent” publications. When a mailed pamphlet promoting the sale of the book was brought to the attention of the United States Attorney\, whose office happened to be in room 301 in Landmark Center\, he was prosecuted by the federal government. \nPlease note this play references mature themes and is recommended for ages 16 and up.
