SUMMARY:13th Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul: The King of Laughter (Qui Rido Io)
DESCRIPTION:At the beginning of the twentieth century\, in the Naples of the Belle Époque\, theaters and cinemas are on the rise. The great comedian Eduardo Scarpetta (Toni Servillo) is the box-office king. Success made him a very rich man: from his humble origins\, he established himself on the scene with his comedies and the mask and character of Felice Sciosciammocca\, who managed to replace Pulcinella in the hearts of the Neapolitan audiences. The theater is his life\, and his complex family core gravitates around the theater\, with wives\, companions\, lovers\, legitimate and illegitimate children including Titina\, Eduardo and Peppino De Filippo. At the height of his success\, Scarpetta allows himself what will prove to be a dangerous gamble. He decides to parody the play “The Daughter of Iorio\,” a tragedy by the greatest Italian poet of the time\, Gabriele D’Annunzio. On opening night\, all hell breaks loose: the play is interrupted by screams\, whistles and insults from the poets and playwrights of the new generation who cry out scandal\, and Scarpetta ends up being sued for plagiarism by D’Annunzio himself. And so the first historic copyright lawsuit in Italy begins. The years of the trial will be exhausting for him and his whole family\, so much so that the delicate balance that held it together seems on the verge of dissolving. DESCRIPTION:Four Sicilian popular feasts tell about ancient traditions and spectacular rites–ones often either not well known or considered “extremely dangerous”. In the cyclical alternation of seasons\, the communities of either fishermen or farmers spend several months of preparatory work leading up to these events\, and finding in them full expression of their collective identity. The ancestral link with the territory is identified with a specific natural element\, richly representative of that place. The film is the final stage of the Sicily Folk Doc\, a project of a documentary series devoted to Sicilian popular feasts. Its protagonist is the community that spends so many months diligently preparing for these events\, finding in them their identity. DESCRIPTION:SOLD OUT \nOne night a year\, the rumors of Landmark Center’s haunting come true\, and Landmark Center is filled with the spirits of days gone by. Cross paths with the ghosts of gangsters\, G-men\, and judges long since departed\, and see Landmark Center through the eyes of Saint Paul’s most famous and infamous inhabitants. \n“Gangster Ghost Tour” is Thursday\, October 28. Tickets are $10 per person (suitable for ages 12+)\, tours begin at 6pm\, last one hour and depart every 15 minutes. \nAdvance ticket purchase is required. Her newest album “The World is Your Lover” is a synthesis of her seven-plus releases\, merging pianos and guitars\, spiritual longing\, and real-world sorrow. Her previous albums achingly express life in melancholy piano-poems\, yet in 2015 Mary risked a genre switch to aggressive electric guitars\, concise lyricism\, and a nod to 90’s grunge.
