Widower Dov (the wonderful Shlomo Bar-Abba) moves into a nursing home but he can’t stand it. He dreams of buying back his old house and returning to live there\, but he has no money since losing his post office pension and he blames the State. When he realizes that everyone in the nursing home uses state-sponsored medical marijuana\, he hatches an inspired plan. Weed will be his salvation – selling it\, not smoking it. He will become a cannabis entrepreneur. But when love\, the police and the local mafia enter the picture\, Dov finds himself at a crossroads where he has to decide whether he would be willing to risk everything for what really matters to him.

When Marlena disappears\, a desperate Willy\, still in love\, searches for her in vain for four years\, then follows a rumor of her living in Montreal in the hopes of reconnecting. When the latter gets called up to military service in West Berlin\, he worries that he’s missing out on big opportunities in Vincent Maël Cardona’s brilliant period music film. \nThe brothers have a hugely popular show on pirate radio in Brittany\, Jeróme being the voice (and face) and Phillippe using his considerable talents to engineer and create stunning dance remixes of the top hits of the day. His older brother is dating Marianne\, whom Phillippe secretly loves… and who may feel likewise. It’s a stunning moment in European political and musical history\, and when Phillippe is called to military duty\, he worries that he’s going to miss earth-shaking events\, not to mention incredible shows. The four books in Moberg \n’s series published between 1949 and 1959 are considered Swedish literary classics. In 1971 and 1972\, director Jan Troell adapted the four tomes into two acclaimed movies starring Max Von Sydow and Liv Ullmann. Now\, in his sensitive adaptation\, Norwegian director Erik Poppe (The King’s Choice) reinterprets the story\, showing it through the eyes of Kristina Nilsson (Lisa Carlehed). Despite not really wanting to leave everything she knows behind\, she is such a devoted wife and partner to the stubborn Karl-Oskar (Gustaf Skarsgård) that she allows herself to be persuaded. Kristina’s friendship with the prostitute-turned-fine lady Ulrika (Swedish pop sensation Tove Lo in her film debut) also gets more screen time.

Join three Gen Z activists on the frontlines of social and environmental change. Meet Pepper\, on strike for democracy in Hong Kong; Hilda\, protesting the effects of the climate crisis created by rich countries on poor women and children in Uganda; and Rayen\, fighting for social equality and human rights in Chile. Winner of the Audience Award at Hot Docs\, Dear Future Children is made by Gen Z filmmakers\, who tell the stories of their subjects as comrades and peers with shared humor\, anxieties\, idealism\, and concerns. Their intimate portraits show the inner struggles of choosing every day to fight. Bearing witness to the complex ways activism changes young lives\, these counter narratives capture the energy\, anger\, and ingenuity of young activists who risk their lives for our future children.

A spiraling student\, he’s suffering from a crushing depression brought on by the death of his mother. When his father brings him home\, there’s a surprise – his long-absent\, icy and reluctantly dependent grandmother Ruth (a spirited Charlotte Rampling) has moved in. \nSharp as a needle but as self-destructive (and perhaps self-delusional) as her grandson\, Ruth is trapped in a wheelchair\, needing someone to feed her\, listen to her\, and most importantly\, pour her enormous pitchers of gin. Slowly\, over time\, the pair begin to connect\, sharing their grief and their dreams\, and a genuine family\, warts and all\, begins to emerge. Matthew J. Being the first American-born member of her undocumented family means coming of age is complicated by the added responsibilities of green card processing and family reunification. In spite of the crushing pressures\, Doris hustles to find new musical talent amongst a community of children of immigrants for whom success is more than an individual dream\, it’s a collective lifeline. \nMija is an emotional and moving portrait of an ambitious young woman moving up in the music world while staying deeply connected to her parents as they struggle for secure permanent residency status\, financial stability\, and the freedom to safely visit their beloved family in Mexico. As the only family member who can traverse the border safely\, Mija represents the hope\, guilt\, and challenges of first generation youth.

SUMMARY:CHOICE Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks - Leadbelly
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nSoulTouch Productions and Landmark Center\, in partnership with Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF)\, present “CHOICE Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks”\, a screening of films by legendary artist Gordon Parks. The selection of films includes Half Past Autumn at 1 pm on Saturday\, May 7; The Learning Tree at 3 pm on Sunday\, May 8; and Leadbelly at 7 pm on Friday\, May 13 in Landmark Center’s F. K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium. \nEach screening will be followed by conversations with special guests from the Black community of filmmakers to examine the themes of the films and how they are relevant in the Black community today. Actor Art Evans is the special guest for the post-film discussion of Lead Belly. \nAbout Leadbelly \nA biography of Huddie Ledbetter (Roger E. Mosley)\, this drama follows the life of the highly influential African-American blues singer and guitarist\, who was better known as “Leadbelly.” The trouble-prone musician frequently ended up working on chain gangs\, and\, when not incarcerated\, he sometimes traveled around with fellow renowned blues man Blind Lemon Jefferson (Art Evans). The film shows how Leadbelly dealt with the racism of his era and found some degree of peace in his music. \nActor Art Evans will be the special guest for Leadbelly. Evans is known for his roles in A Soldier’s Story (1984)\, Die Hard 2 (1990)\, Ruthless People (1986)\, and Trespass (1992). He portrayed Blind Lemon Jefferson in Gordon Parks’ Leadbelly\, where his ability to play a number of musical instruments by ear came in handy. Evans studied drama at the Theater of Being under the tutelage of Frank Silvera. Evans will be in conversation with Kokayi Ampah\, acclaimed film industry Location Manager and Producer who was mentored by Gordon Parks in his early career\, assisting on Shaft (1971) and Leadbelly. Ampah’s illustrious career spans over 50 years\, with 40 films to his credit such as Poetic Justice (1993)\, The Color Purple (1985) and Shawshank Redemption (1994). \nAbout Gordon Parks \nGordon Parks’ films are recognized for their cultural significance and present positive and powerful media representation of young Black men. Parks used his camera as his “weapon” of choice to fight poverty and racism. His work not only gave the rest of the world a glimpse into the life of a person of color\, but offered hope\, choice\, opportunity\, and a platform to many in the Black community. As a nationally recognized photographer\, musician\, writer\, and film director\, Gordon Parks’ influence has extended through multiple generations and throughout our nation\, beginning in St. Paul with his skill in photography. \nThis series will honor Gordon Parks’ legacy\, his choice to use film and photography to portray the Black experience and be a catalyst for societal change. It will feature themes that remain relevant today\, including mass incarceration\, racism\, and coming of age. For many in the Black community\, it will be an opportunity to feature stories and narratives not often seen or represented in the mainstream\, while for non-Black communities\, it will further the understanding of the Black experience\, break down barriers and stereotypes\, and provide a fuller context to Parks’ work. \n“Choice Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks” is supported by the Saint Paul Cultural STAR Program. For more information on the series\, visit the CHOICE Cinema series page at landmarkcenter.org or call 651.292.3063.

When her niece is set to marry\, Alegría reluctantly agrees to host the event. Supported by Dunia\, her bubbly Moroccan housekeeper\, and Marian\, her chill Christian best friend\, Alegría must open her home and revisit her Jewish roots. \nControl is a guiding principle in Alegría’s life\, and the chaos of the wedding and all its attendant rituals–not to mention a hopeful reunion with her daughter\, absent now for 5 years–leaves her feeling adrift. But Alegría has friends\, she has family\, and even after a rocky start\, the love and respect begins to shine through as she begins to embrace her family’s Jewish past. Violeta Salama\, with her directing debut\, makes the city of Melilla (where she grew up) as much a part of this family as the characters themselves.

Additionally\, you’ll have the chance to create an effigy representing injustice out of clay\, and then smash it with a giant gavel. This art engagement is being held before the film screening of CHOICE Cinema series’ Half Past Autumn: The Life and Works of Gordon Parks\, which addresses the racism and adversity Mr. Parks overcame in his life’s works. Come for the art engagement and stay for the film!
