SUMMARY:MSPIFF44 Film Screening: Ai Weiwei's Turnadot
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF) returns April 2-13 to The Main Cinema and other venues around the Twin Cities\, including Landmark Center. As the largest annual celebration of international cinema in the region\, MSPIFF44 promises another exciting lineup of 200+ films from around the world\, plus an exciting array of parties\, panels\, visiting filmmakers\, and special guests. \nRenowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei turns his attention to directing Puccini’s opera Turandot at the Rome Opera\, with his friend\, choreographer Chiang Ching. They begin work\, only to be thwarted by the pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, which affected artists in the production. What finally emerges is a Turandot as beautiful as it is political. By his own admission\, Weiwei knew very little about opera\, except that he had once been an extra almost 40 years ago in a Metropolitan Opera production of Turandot. Now\, Weiwei takes Puccini’s tale of a Chinese prince who wants to win the hand of princess Turandot at the risk of his own life\, and infuses it with current political commentary as only Weiwei can do. Ai Weiwei’s Turandot will go down as among the best\, and most unique\, films on the power of art.

SUMMARY:MSPIFF44 Film Screening: The New Year That Never Came
DESCRIPTION:The Minneapolis St. \nA slyly funny\, thrillingly confident work full of wit\, irony and empathy\, this robust ensemble piece unfolds over two days in late December 1989 in a Bucharest sapped of seasonal spirit\, as white-hot\, sidewalk-level fury at the Nicolae Ceausescu regime cuts through the December cold. Even as TV bureaucrats put the final touches on New Year’s shows that glorify the president\, the streets are alive with demonstrations and students mock the regime through art. Meanwhile\, behind closed doors\, families grapple with personal conflicts and the omnipresent Secret Police. Six seemingly disconnected lives intersect in unexpected ways. As tensions reach a boiling point\, an explosive moment brings them together\, culminating in the dramatic fall of Ceausescu and the communist regime.

SUMMARY:Courtroom Concert: Elkina Piano Duo
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by composer Abbie Betinis\, our popular Courtroom Concerts take place at noon most Thursdays in the Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area\, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artists: \n“Simply dazzling” is the way the American Record Guide has described the Elkina Piano Duo. \nHaving played together since the age of five\, Russian-born identical twins Julia and Irina Elkina are praised for their “truly remarkable oneness” by critics who also recognize that “each is a formidable pianist in her own right.” \nThe Elkina twins won the top prize in The Fourth Murray Dranoff International Two Piano Competition\, where they also received a special prize for the best performance of a commissioned work by composer Paul Schoenfield.  They have performed throughout the United States\, making their New York debut in 1996 and playing return engagements there and in San Francisco\, Chicago\, Minneapolis/Saint Paul\, Miami and New Orleans\, just to name a few. \nThe twins have appeared at numerous festivals including Ravinia\, the Gilmore Keyboard Festival\, the Oregon Bach Festival\, and the Minnesota Orchestra’s Sommerfest\, and have performed with such conductors as Hugh Wolff and Bobby McFerrin. \nThe Elkinas have been heard on National Public Radio and many public radio stations nationwide including the award-winning weekly series Saint Paul Sunday\, Performance Today\, and A Prairie Home Companion. They have also been praised for their collaboration with acclaimed puppeteer Basil Twist’s production of Petrouchka\, which returned for a much-awaited engagement at New York’s Lincoln Center in 2008 and has been performed throughout the United States. \nThe sisters studied under Professor Alexander Braginsky at the University of Minnesota\, where they earned their Doctoral Degrees in Piano Performance. \nThey both are currently on the piano faculty of MacPhail Center for Music. Julia is also on the faculty of the Century College\, and Irina is starting to teach at the University of St. Thomas this year. The highlights of this season also include their opening of the MacPhail Spotlight series and their rendition of the rarely performed Mendelssohn Two Piano Concerto.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception: Urban Observations: Three Points of View — Jim Lammers\, James Nutt\, & Don Thomas
DESCRIPTION:Urban Observations: Three Points of ViewAn Exhibition by James Nutt\, Jim Lammers\, and Don Thomas \nJames Nutt\, Jim Lammers\, and Don Thomas have chosen a creative pause—an intentional return to sketching\, drawing\, and painting as a way to see the world more clearly. As Urban Observers\, they give themselves permission to slow down\, to play\, and to truly notice. Through their individual perspectives\, they explore the quiet stories found in everyday city life—each capturing moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. \nWhether working in bustling streets or quiet corners\, these three artists sketch in public\, in the moment\, and on location. Their styles are distinct\, yet their shared curiosity and appreciation for observation unite them. This exhibition invites you to celebrate the art of looking closely\, of finding beauty in the ordinary\, and of seeing the world through three unique lenses. \nOpening Reception:Tuesday\, May 13\, 2025 | 5–7 PMNorth Gallery\, Landmark Center \nExhibition on View:May 11 – July 31\, 2025
