SUMMARY:Sketches of Life Drawing Workshop with Don Thomas
DESCRIPTION:This class has reached its enrollment capacity. To sign up for Moment Sketching with Jim Lammers on Saturday\, July 5th from 12-2pm\, visit https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/landmarkcenter/moment-sketching-with-jim-lammers  \nThe Sketches of Life Workshop is an invitation to slow down\, learn some unique observational skills and try out some easy drawing techniques. The goal of the workshop is to inspire you to go out in public and sketch people in our daily lives. \nThis is not a portrait class\, so please relax. Portrait accuracy is not the goal. And it is not a lesson in ‘State Fair’ caricatures\, (which can possibly offend). I hope to teach you the art of anonymous and respectful observation. \nWe will explore: \n\nFinding & Seeing: Where to look for people to sketch: best places to observe\, what is most interesting\, compelling and unique about people?\nCatch and Release: How to quickly create a gesture drawing and move onto the next page\nVisual Notetaking: How to give yourself enough information to finish a drawing later\nFaces/Heads: How to draw personality into your sketch\nThe World in Motion: How to see and capture movement\, balance and form in a moving world\n\nThis workshop will meet at Landmark Center in Courtroom 326 on the third floor. \nAll supplies are included\, but please bring a chair or stool. The workshop will be heading outside to sketch\, so dress accordingly. Please feel free to bring a water bottle and any additional supplies you would like to have!  \nThis workshop is free to attend\, but registration is required as spots are limited. Secure your spot here\, or call 651-292-3063 to register.

SUMMARY:RCHS: "History Revealed - Rubinski Works"
DESCRIPTION:History Revealed – Rubinski Works\nPresented by Ramsey County Historical Society \nThursday\, June 26\, 2025 \nLandmark Center\, Courtroom 317 \n6:00 PM-7:30 PM \n$10 \n\nRegister Here \n\nRamsey County Historical Society welcomes Rubinski Works\, aka Madison Holler\, for an evening of conversation on her artwork. Madison’s work centers around beautiful jewelry that honors her Dakota ancestry. \n“Nature is a huge inspiration in my work\, so my roots in central Minnesota and in northern Minnesota (near my cabin on rainy lake) are engrained in my work\, always. From the landscape to the flora and fauna — these are my muses.” \nConversation moderated by Youa Vang. \nAbout Madison Holler: \nMadison R. Holler is the artist behind Rubinski Works\, operating on Wahpekute + Anishinaabewaki Land (Central Minnesota). \nOne-of-a-kind works are created by Madi with glass and metal seed beads on waxed thread. She also practices metal smithing techniques to construct abstract precious metal components for her work. \nMadison’s work explores the bridge between traditional craft and modern art practices. Her collections provide commentary on her shared Dutch\, Scandinavian\, and Anishinaabe heritage\, with an emphasis on storytelling and folklore. \nMadison has a vocational background in photography and graphic design\, as well as experience in fine art practices\, such as ceramics\, printmaking\, painting\, and illustration.

SUMMARY:PACIM: Afternoon with the Author - Anthony Bukoski
DESCRIPTION:For forty-one years\, Anthony Bukoski has written short stories about Polish Americans in northern Wisconsin. In the program\, he will tell why he began doing this and how he has been inspired to continue. Though understanding that the stories may be flawed\, he has been loyal to his subject\, never straying from it. He will read very brief passages from a few of the stories and conclude by reading “A Sea Story” from The Thief of Words. \nA discussion will follow\, and Anthony is be pleased to sign books afterward. \nAnthony Bukoski was born and raised in Superior\, Wisconsin\, the port city where his Polish immigrant grandparents settled. The author’s short story collections have twice won the Polish American Historical Association’s Creative Arts Award and once its Oskar Halecki Prize. The Sarmatian Review\, under the aegis of the Polish Institute of Houston\, also recognized Bukoski with its first Literary Award “for excellence in presenting the life of American Polish communities in the Midwest.” \nFrom University of Wisconsin Press: “The Thief of Words is filled with desperate runaways\, the unhappily married\, and the displaced. These characters often long for happiness but struggle to explain—even to themselves—what that would entail. The lightly interconnected stories in this riveting collection are split between the Polish American communities of northern Wisconsin and Louisiana\, where refugees from World War II were resettled. Exploring themes of dislocation and assimilation\, love and loneliness\, and generational conflict\, Anthony Bukoski admirably paints portraits of people doing their best\, despite the odds and their sometimes-thwarted attempts to follow the urgings of their better angels.”

SUMMARY:Moment Sketching Workshop with Jim Lammers
DESCRIPTION:Learn to draw and get more out of traveling! ‘Moment sketching’ is capturing the moment\, expressing how you feel about what you are observing and sketching. It’s the perfect approach for traveling because it will help you become more observant and expand your experience. \n“There is a tremendous difference between seeing a thing without a pencil in your hand and seeing it while drawing it.” – Leonardo Da Vinci \nThis class will introduce drawing and design concepts (line\, shape\, value\, perspective\, shade\, shadow\, composition) in a supportive atmosphere. The idea is to do a rough sketch that is not overly detailed\, to simply observe and then sketch. Don’t pressure yourself to be accurate (accuracy is for cameras) but rather get into a rhythm and sketch from the right side of your brain. We’ll use the interesting architecture around and within Landmark Center. \nThis workshop will meet at Landmark Center in Courtroom 408. The workshop will move about the building to sketch different areas. \nAll supplies will be provided! If you’d like to bring a lunch or something to drink\, you are welcome to do so. \nThis workshop is free to attend\, but registration is required as spots are limited. Secure your spot here\, or call 651-292-3063 to register.
