SUMMARY:History Revealed: Tracing Teddy Roosevelt
DESCRIPTION:Join RCHS for a special History Revealed presentation. As part of his “Tracing TR’s 1903 Train Trip Tour\,” author James Blase will present the history of Teddy Roosevelt’s 1903 train trip that culminated in a stop at the Grand Canyon. Blase’s new book\, “Keep it for Your Children: Theodore Roosevelt’s 1903 Western Trip\,” creates a first-person journal of a 66-day western train trip the President made during his first term in office\, in 1903 – a year after Landmark Center first opened its doors. The train trip included a stop in Saint Paul\, where Theodore Roosevelt arrived by train at 2:30 pm on April 4\, 1903\, and where the President spoke to a crowd estimated at approximately 50\,000 outside the Cedar Street side of the State Capitol. Late in the afternoon the President travelled to Minneapolis\, where he attended a banquet and made a speech at the Nicolette Hotel. \nJim Blase’s presentation\, complete with photos\, will cover the entire 66-day trip\, but he will be emphasizing the President’s stops in Saint Paul and Minneapolis. The presentation is in conjunction with a two-week Amtrak western “loop tour” train trip Blase will be making\, beginning in St Louis Missouri (the “Gateway to the West”) on July 1\, and continuing through New Mexico\, the Grand Canyon\, California\, Oregon\, Montana\, North Dakota and Minnesota\, culminating back in St. Louis. Past Music in the Café musicians have gone on to be featured at the Dakota Jazz Club and on NBC’s The Voice! They are free and open to the public. Guests are invited to bring their lunch or purchase one from Anita’s Café. Music in the Café is sponsored in part by KFAI Radio with additional support from the Minnesota Music Coalition. \nPeter Kogan\, percussionist and composer\, has performed with the Pittsburgh Symphony\, the Minnesota Orchestra\, and the Lyra/Baroque Orchestra. The Peter Kogan Quartet and Septet (The Monsterful Wonderband) perform regularly at clubs around the Twin Cities. Kogan’s newest album “The Green Album” was released in November 2018. \nAbebi Stafford\, from Atlanta\, Georgia\, has been playing Jazz and Classical piano since he was 9 years old. He’s headlined in the Atlanta and Minneapolis/St. Paul Jazz festivals in 2002. In 2013 and 2014 he released his 3rd album “Are Changing” which is his first album containing all original works. \nTed Olsen is a bassist and composer from Minneapolis. As a bandleader his groups have been featured at the Twin Cities Jazz Festival\, The Artists’ Quarter\, and Icehouse. He has also performed at Nocturne Jazz Club in Denver\, CO and Festival No Improviso in Curitiba\, Brazil. In composition he won the 2012 Eric Stokes Song Contest held by the American Composers’ Forum.

Strong songwriting\, tight harmonies\, and a gonzo approach have been winning fans for Pushing Chain across the Midwest and beyond.

SUMMARY:North Gallery Exhibition: League of Women Voters
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the 19th Amendment and their centennials this year\, LWV St. Paul and LWV Minnesota present “A Century of Civic Engagement: League of Women Voters\,” which will make its debut in Landmark Center’s North Gallery during the LWVMN’s Convention in April and remain on display through May. This exhibit of 12 pop-up panels and related history and photos will celebrate the LWV’s history\, beginning with the suffrage movement in the 19th century and continuing through today’s work educating and encouraging active\, informed participation in government. The exhibit will include history on both LWV Minnesota and LWV St. Paul\, who both turn 100 this year. \nThe exhibit will be open during normal building hours through May 28\, 2019. \nRegister for the opening reception

DESCRIPTION:Janice Quick: Stories in Stone: Victorian Headstones at Forest Lawn Cemetery\nFree and open to all. No reservations needed. \nJoin RCHS for History Revealed\, our program series featuring presentations and tours from the best of local historians\, authors and archaeologists\, with a wide range of topics drawn from the heritage and traditions of Ramsey County. \nJanice Quick has photographed and researched a variety of Victorian mourning symbols on headstones at Forest Lawn cemetery. Some symbols express the sentiments of the mourners. A few expose superstitions of the era. Many depict the careers\, interests and lifestyles of the individuals interred below the stones. \nView PowerPoint photos of beautifully hand-carved headstones\, many in the shape of trees\, with images of ivy\, ferns\, calla lilies\, birds\, wheat\, corn and other natural subjects\, as well as the logos of several local organizations. Hear how those images reflect the lives and times of the persons honored by the elaborate headstones. \nJanice Quick is a historian\, researcher and writer. \nAttendees are welcome to bring a bag lunch.
