This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area\, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artists: \nLibby Larsen\, born December 24\, 1950 in Wilmington\, Delaware\, is one of America’s most performed living composers.\nShe has created a catalogue of over 500 works spanning virtually every genre from intimate vocal and chamber music to massive orchestral works and over 15 operas. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area\, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artists: \nLINDA CHATTERTON\, Flute \n“The kind of performance that sparks wild standing ovations. Definitive” says the American Record Guide of flutist Linda Chatterton. Ms. Chatterton has performed in New York at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center\, was a featured recitalist on the prestigious Dame Myra Hess series in Chicago and has been heard throughout the US many times on National Public Radio’s Performance Today.  A Minneapolis-based artist\, Ms. Chatterton has performed with numerous groups including the Minnesota Orchestra\, and she tours regularly as a duo performer with harp\, guitar and piano. As a concerto soloist\, highlights include many performances of traditional and contemporary repertoire in the US and Europe. She has served as a US State Department Arts Envoy overseas. \nMs. Chatterton has commissioned\, recorded and premiered dozens of new works\, including music by Edie Hill\, Lu Pei\, Abbie Betinis\, Jocelyn Hagen\, David Kechley\, Wendy Wan-Ki Lee\, Aaron Travers\, Takuma Itoh and Roberto Sierra. She gave the world premiere of Chen Yi’s “Southern Scenes” flute and pipa concerto with the Hawai’i Symphony Orchestra\, conductor JoAnn Falletta and pipa player Gao Hong\, as well as the world premiere of Cuban composer Leo Brouwer’s work for flute and guitar quartet\, with the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet\, in St. Paul.  She and guitarist Maja Radovanlija premiered a major new work written for them by Brazilian-American composer Clarice Assad\, through a Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning grant. \nPast projects include concert tours in China\, Thailand\, Hong Kong and Taiwan; a concerto performance with the State Hermitage Chamber Orchestra in Moscow\, Russia\, with a master class at the Moscow Conservatory; concerts and master classes in the UAE\, Spain\, France\, Cuba\, Montenegro and Romania; a concert tour of Australia with pianist Matthew McCright; and a sold-out concert at the DiMenna Center in New York City of contemporary chamber music by Hong Kong composers. Her London concert at the famous St. Martin-in-the-Fields concert series with McCright garnered the review: “Throughout the concert Chatterton displayed lovely tone and a fine sense of line\, with technical prowess which was always understated\, resulting in some involving and intelligent performances.” \nShe is the first and only two-time flutist to win a McKnight Artist Fellowship for Musicians\, and she has received many awards from the Jerome Foundation\, Chamber Music America\, the Minnesota State Arts Board and the American Composers Forum. \nIn addition to her concert schedule\, Ms. Chatterton is highly regarded for her insightful master classes\, and she has served as a mentor to music students at the University of Minnesota’s School of Music.  In a related realm\, Ms. Chatterton often can be heard giving her “It Sounded Better at Home!” workshop series based on her extensive work on the psychology of optimum performance. \nMs. Chatterton has recorded on the CBS Masterworks\, Innova\, and Gothic labels\, and has also independently released seven recordings\, including her most recent recording\, “Songs and Dances for Solo Flute.” \nShe received her Master of Music degree from the University of Minnesota\, studying with Julia Bogorad\, and her Bachelor of Music degree from the Eastman School of Music as a scholarship student of Bonita Boyd. A native of Fort Atkinson\, Wisconsin\, her first flute studies were with Robert Webb. \nMs. Chatterton is a Powell Flute Artist and plays a custom made platinum Powell flute. \nwww.lindachatterton.com \nMAJA RADOVANLIJA\, Guitar \nAn international performer\, improviser and teacher\, Minneapolis-based guitarist Maja Radovanlija has been Instructor of Guitar at the School of Music\, University of Minnesota since 2011. She tours nationally and internationally as a member of the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet and as part of a flute-guitar duo with flutist Linda Chatterton. She has also collaborated with other chamber musicians such as the Szilard Mézei trio\, oboist Yasna Brandstäter\, ImprovIsAndDo project\, Improvised Ecosystems\, OneVoice mixed chorus and Ansambl Studio 6. \nHer concerts have taken her across the United States and to China\, Thailand\, Canada\, Bulgaria\, Greece\, Tunisia\, Switzerland\, Luxemburg\, Belgium and the former Yugoslavia. Festival performances include Plovdiv Guitar Festival in Bulgaria\, the International Festival of Contemporary Music in Cuba; the Mid-America Guitar Festival\, the Underwater-Overground Multimedia Festival in Croatia\, the Ethno-Flanders Music Festival in Belgium and the GuitarArt Festival in Montenegro. \nSince her early performing years in Belgrade\, Maja has a strong interest in contemporary music. She has premiered new pieces by Aaron Travers\, Clarice Assad\, Leo Brouwer\, PQ Phan\, Szilard Mézei\, Alex Lubet\, Joey Crane\, Ben Abrahamson\, Jeffrey Van\, Ian Krouse\, Mary Ellen Childs\, Catherine Dalton\, Richard Barret and many others. In solo recitals Maja often performs her own pieces inspired by Balkan music\, improvised pieces and arrangements of traditional Balkan songs. \nMaja’s commitment to music education and community outreach is shown by her creation of the Minneapolis-based Powderhorn Music Project\, a guitar program that offers free lessons\, workshops and performances to for BIPOC children and their families. Her guest artist events at universities include solo recitals and masterclasses at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee\, the University of Hawaii\, the University of Georgia and Indiana University. In addition to her teaching\, she serves as an adjudicator in national and international competitions. Maja is proponent of music improvisation and is on the board of the International Society for Improvised Music. \nMaja received her Master and Doctorate of Musical Arts degrees from Indiana University as a student of Ernesto Bitetti and Nigel North. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music from the University of Belgrade in Serbia. \n  \nMATTHEW MCCRIGHT\, Piano \nAmerican pianist Matthew McCright has performed extensively throughout the United States\, Europe\, Asia\, and the South Pacific and on such prestigious stages as Carnegie Hall\, Merkin Hall\, St. Martin-in-the-Fields\, and Ireland’s National Concert Hall. He has thrilled audiences and critics alike with imaginative programming that places the greatest piano repertoire alongside the music of today’s most innovative composers. A native of Pennsylvania\, McCright now resides in Minneapolis\, Minnesota\, and is a member of the piano faculty of Carleton College. An accomplished recording artist\, McCright has released eight solo recordings; his most recent Hanging by a Thread on the Proper Canary label\, What is Left Behind also on the Proper Canary label\, Endurance on the Vox Novus label\, as well as three albums on innova Records (Second Childhood\, A Waltz through the Vapor\, and Blender)\, the piano works of Gene Gutchë on Centaur Records\, and the piano music of Olivier Messiaen on Albany Records. He has performed in collaboration with a variety of ensembles including Ensemble 61\, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra\, dal niente\, Mirandola Ensemble\, Wild and Wulliman\, La Bonne Chanson\, Intersections\, Gypsy Hocket\, Renegade Ensemble\, Zeitgeist\, Taipei Trio\, Balkanicus\, New Sound\, New Century Piano Duo\, Dixie Five\, Composer’s Ensemble\, Westminster Triptych\, WC Jazz Ensemble\, and with countless other chamber music groups. He is currently the Director of Music at Saints Martha and Mary Episcopal Church. He tours regularly with violinist\, Francesca Anderegg. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area\, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artists: \nMaria Jette\, soprano\, has appeared with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra\, New York Chamber Symphony\, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Orchestra: the Symphonies of Houston\, Austin\, San Antonio\, Grand Rapids\, Kansas City\, Charlotte\, Santa Rosa and Buffalo; Vocalessence (formerly The Plymouth Music Series of Minnesota)\, the Handel Choir of Baltimore\, Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia\, and Los Angeles Master Chorale; and with original instrument ensembles Angelica Cantanti\, Portland Baroque Orchestra and The Lyra Baroque Orchestra. She has been a regular guest at the Oregon Bach\, Victoria Bach and San Luis Obispo Mozart Festivals\, the Oregon Festival of American Music\, and on Public Radio International’s A Prairie Home Companion. With conductor Helmuth Rilling\, she has sung Bach\, Mozart and Monteverdi in Germany\, Spain\, Japan\, and Canada\, as well as in Minneapolis\, New York\, Washington\, D.C. and Los Angeles. In a 20+ year association with conductor Philip Brunelle\, she first appeared as the coloratura dog\, Fido\, in Britten’s Paul Bunyan; and has gone on to sing everything from fully-staged operas by Mozart opera and Virgil Thomson through oratorios by Handel\, William Bolcom and Francis Grier\, and most recently\, Dominick Argento’s glorious Evensong (2009). \nHer 45+ operatic roles range from Monteverdi’s Poppea and Handel’s Cleopatra through Mozart’s Pamina\, Countess and Fiordiligi\, many of them with the late\, lamented Ex Machina Antique Music Theatre in the Twin Cities. With The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra\, she starred as the Mrs. in the May 2002 premiere of Garrison Keillor’s operatic excursion\, Mr. and Mrs. Olson. She has performed her own production of Seuss/Kapilow’s Green Eggs & Ham for more than 50\,000 kids\, with symphonies and music festivals around the USA. \nSonja Thompson enjoys a varied career as a chamber\, church and theater musician\, conductor\, vocal coach and educator.  Having received her formal education at the University of Minnesota and The Juilliard School\, she has spent decades teaching\,  performing\, improvising\, collaborating\, and assisting with the development of new works.  Performing credits include solo recitals\, chamber music and Art Song as well as new music\, Music Theater/Opera\, and programs that mix genres and styles.  Recent projects include La Boheme with Theater Latte Da\, Moonlit Walk Home with Nautilus Music Theater\,  “Transformations\,” a collaborative performance combining poetry with paintings by Carolyn Brunelle and music by David Evan Thomas; a recording of piano music by David Evan Thomas; and new works of music theater with Nautilus Music Theater\, MN History Theater\, Theater Latte Da\, Augsburg University and various independent collaborators. \nViolinist Stephanie Arado’s career encompasses a wide range of performance and teaching experience. She most recently completed a year of teaching at the Interlochen Arts Academy\, an institution she graduated from in 1982. She occupied the Loring M. Staples Chair as Assistant Concertmaster of the Minnesota Orchestra from 1991 to 2013. During the 1995/96 season\, Ms. Arado served as Concertmaster of The Colorado Symphony under the baton of Marin Alsop. While in Minneapolis\, she maintained a private teaching studio and was a founding member of the Bakken Trio\, a premier chamber music organization in the Twin Cities. Through her work with the Bakken Trio she has collaborated with many living composers and commissioned numerous chamber compositions. Ms. Arado continues to serve as a Co-Artistic Director of the Bakken. \nMs. Arado played her first solo recital at the age of eight. She went on to debut with the Chicago Symphony as a 12 year old; following that she has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras throughout the US\, including the Detroit\, St. Louis\, and Minnesota Orchestras. As a 21-year-old Ms. Arado was the first American ever invited to play with the European Union Youth Orchestra led by Claudio Abbado and Leonard Bernstein. She was also invited to perform as a part of the prestigious chamber music festival Musiktreffen in St. Moritz\, Switzerland with Paul Tortelier and Yuri Bashmet\, two of the most renowned chamber musicians of the century. \nShe was born and raised in Chicago. She began playing the violin at the age of five using the Suzuki method with Sister Mary Ricardo of La Grange. She was fortunate to have worked with many fine violin pedagogues in her youth including Paul Rolland\, Eugene Gratovich and David Cerrone at the famous Meadowmount School. She spent five summers as a Fellowship student at the Aspen Music School. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music at Western Illinois University (Macomb\, IL) studying with Almita and Roland Vamos\, and completed her Masters Degree at Juilliard in New York City under the tutelage of Dorothy Delay and Paul Kantor.

Eventually\, the quartet sang some of Cheryl’s favorite songs at her memorial service. Since this humble beginning\, Kaleidoscope Quartet has performed across Minnesota\, with regular performances in the Twin Cities. Each song and performance reveals a kaleidoscope of musical colors that emerges from their joined voices.

SUMMARY:Courtroom Concert: Clara Osowski\, mezzo-soprano
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by composer Abbie Betinis\, our popular Courtroom Concerts take place at noon most Thursdays in the Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area\, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area. These one-hour concerts are free and open to the public. \nAbout the Artists: \nMezzo-soprano Clara Osowski\, who sings “from inside the music with unaffected purity and sincerity” (UK Telegraph)\, is an active soloist and chamber musician hailed for her “rich and radiant voice” (UrbanDial Milwaukee). She was a Metropolitan Opera National Council Upper-Midwest Regional Finalist\, the winner of several competitions including Bel Canto Chorus Regional Artists Competition of Milwaukee\, the Houston Saengerbund Competition\, several time runner-up in The Schubert Club Bruce P. Carlson Scholarship Competition\, and third place in the Madison Handel Aria Competition. Recognized for her excellence in Minnesota\, Clara was a recipient of the prestigious 2018-2019 McKnight Artist Fellowships for Musicians administered by MacPhail Center for Music. \nIn international competition with pianist Tyler Wottrich\, in March of 2017\, Clara became the first ever American prize winner when she placed second at Thomas Quasthoff’s International Das Lied Competition in Heidelberg\, Germany. Later that year\, the duo was also one of four to reach the finals in the very prestigious Wigmore Hall/Kohn Foundation Song Competition in London\, and Clara was awarded the Richard Tauber Prize for the best interpretation of Schubert Lieder. She recently won the Radio-Canada People’s Choice Award and third place in the song division at the 2018 Concours Musical International de Montréal. \nRecent performance highlights include her debut with Minnesota Opera as Mrs. Herring in Britten’s Albert Herring\, and active as a recitalist\, she stepped in for Susanna Philips in The Schubert Club International Artist Series Recital with Eric Owens. She has also been a feature recitalist at the Enlightenment Festival of Seraphic Fire\, The Pablo Center of Eau Claire\, Wisconsin\, The Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts\, and several universities. She has collaborated with many chamber musicians\, including pianist Wu Han\, The Lydian String Quartet\, VocalEssence Ensemble Singers\, the Minneapolis Guitar Quartet\, Accordo\, and Dark Horse Consort. Clara’s passion for contemporary music is exhibited in the song-cycles and chamber music she has premiered or commissioned by numerous composers including James Kallembach\, Libby Larsen\, David Evan Thomas\, Linda Kachelmeier\, Reinaldo Moya\, Carol Barnett\, and Juliana Hall. \nOrchestral performance highlights include her soloist debuts of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Bel Canto Chorus of Milwaukee\, B Minor Mass with the Back Bay Chorale of Boston\, Christmas Oratorio with Bach Society of Minnesota\, Mozart’s Requiem with Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra\, Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 with Tulsa Signature Symphony\, Bernstein’s Jeremiah with Mid-Columbia Symphony\, and Dominick Argento’s orchestral song cycles Casa Guidi and A few words about Chekhov with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra of Minneapolis. \nActive also as an educator\, Clara has enjoyed giving masterclasses and convocations at several universities\, including Syracuse University\, Muhlenberg College\, Seattle University\, Concordia College (Moorhead)\, and North Dakota State University. She was also the guest artist in residence at Indiana State University’s 50th Contemporary Music Festival celebrating the music of Libby Larsen. Clara also served on the faculty at the Aspen Music Festival’s Professional Choral Institute in partnership with Seraphic Fire\, and has been a panelist for SongFest and the Lakes Area Music Festival. \nPrevious season highlights include her Wigmore Hall debut recital with Julius Drake\, debuts with Kansas City Symphony and Handel and Haydn Society\, a premiere oratorio with the National Lutheran Choir by Steve Heitzig\, and a premiere orchestral song cycle by Carol Barnett with the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Please visit the schedule for more information. \nIn addition to performing\, Clara serves as the Artistic Director of Source Song Festival\, a week-long art song festival in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. This festival strives to create and perform new art song\, and cultivate an educational environment for students of song\, including composers\, vocalists\, and collaborative pianists. In addition to her solo work\, she participates in a number of ensembles\, including Lumina Women’s Ensemble\, Lorelei Ensemble\, and Seraphic Fire.
