DESCRIPTION:Join Heritage Organization of Romanian Americans in Minnesota (HORA) and celebrate the arrival of spring with the cherished Romanian tradition of Mărțișor—a symbol of renewal\, hope\, and cultural pride. Observed in both Romania and Moldova\, Mărțișor refers to both the custom and the delicate token exchanged at the start of March: a small ornament crafted from twisted red and white threads\, often adorned with a tassel. \nThe name Mărțișor comes from marț\, an old folk term for March (martie in modern Romanian)\, and translates to “little March.” Traditionally worn pinned to the chest like a brooch or lapel pin\, this charming keepsake is shared from March 1st onward to mark the beginning of spring. \nJoin us in making your own Mărțișor! DESCRIPTION:  \nDonna Stoering is an award-winning recording artist\, concert pianist\, and vocalist\, touring worldwide as a soloist in major concert halls\, music festivals\, orchestral appearances\, duo-recitals\, chamber music concerts\, and as special guest performer on the radio and television networks of numerous countries….. \nShe is also an international keynote speaker\, educator\, Marshall Scholar\, author\, journalist\, television host/presenter and producer\, award-winning social entrepreneur\, an Artistic Ambassador for both the UK and USA\, a sought-after performance coach at music conservatories worldwide\, and the youngest-ever judge of music competitions in Russia\, Italy\, Canada\, UK and USA. \nCurrently based in Minneapolis MN\, Jane Cords-O’Hara is a busy freelance cellist who performs with a wide variety of groups. She is a member of The Knights\,  Fíora Ensemble (www.fioraensemble.com) and Ladyslipper Ensemble in Minneapolis. She has performed\, toured and recorded with numerous other ensembles over the years including the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, Minnesota Orchestra\, Irish Chamber Orchestra\, Orchestra of St. Luke’s\, Argento\, Da Capo Chamber Players\, MN Opera\, Yo Yo Ma and the Silk Road Ensemble\, String Orchestra of NYC and A Far Cry.  Equally comfortable in many styles\, Jane has played a large amount of new and spectral music\, as well as baroque cello\, and has performed with Lyra Baroque\, Bach Society of MN and the WolfGang Ensemble. She is principal cello at the annual Bach Roots Festival\, and has played the role of continuo in many large works such as St John’s and St Matthew’s Passion. She recently gave solo recitals at the Cellissimo Festival in Galway\, Ireland (May 2024). \nAs a member of the The Knights\, a NYC based chamber orchestra\, Jane has been performing since 2004. Nominated for a Grammy in 2017 and 2024\, The Knights have collaborated with artists such as Yo Yo Ma\, Gil Shaham\, Susan Graham\, Dawn Upshaw\, Chris Thile\, Aaron Diehl and Bela Fleck. Recent appearances have been at the Caramoor\, Tanglewood\, Ravinia\, Stillwater and Ojai Festivals\, Central Park’s Naumburg concert series\, Trinity Wall Street and Carnegie Hall\, where they are currently in residence.  Internationally\, Jane has appeared with The Knights in Germany\, Denmark\, Austria (at the Musikverein)\, Ireland and at the Canary Island’s Music Festival. She can also be heard on several recordings on the Sony Classical label\, and also on the album Azul\, featuring Yo Yo Ma as soloist. \nJane has a deep love of chamber music. A founder member of the Fíora Ensemble (formerly Jamison Ensemble)  Jane performs all around the Twin Cities. Fíora is an ensemble flexible in size depending on repertoire. As a member of Ladyslipper Ensemble\, Jane performs regularly around the Twin Cities and is featured on the album The World’s Highway\, recorded at MPR.  Jane  performed many times at the LOFT Chamber Music series in Minnepolis and has also been a frequent guest artist with Chamber Music Society of MN. As a former member of Syrius Piano Trio\, she performed all over Ireland\, and internationally at London’s Conway Hall\, Carnegie’s Weill Hall and Brazil’s Musica Nova festival in Sao Paulo. Syrius Trio recorded the complete piano trios of Saloman Jadassohn on the Toccata Classics label.  She spent many summers performing at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival in Ireland. She is the core cellist of the Minneapolis quartet for Candlelight Concerts and plays many concerts a year at various venues in the Twin Cities. \nBefore relocating to the Twin Cities in 2014\, Jane lived in NYC. She was Artist-in-Residence at International House from 2004-2005\, and made her recital debut at Carnegie’s Weill Hall in 2006 as a winner in the Artist’s International competition. \nJane is a devoted teacher. She has a private studio in Minneapolis and also teaches at Augsburg University. She was on faculty at the International Cello Institute at St Olaf college in 2017 and 2024 and at the Northern Lights Chamber Music Institute in 2018. She spent several summers mentoring young aspiring composers at the Walden School in New Hampshire. She recently gave a masterclass at the Cellissimo Festival in May 2024. She was on faculty at the inaugural Twin Cities Cello Camp in July 2025. \nBorn and raised in Ireland\, Jane Cords-O’Hara began playing the cello at the age of 9. She studied with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester\, UK\, before moving to New York to complete her studies with Timothy Eddy at Mannes College of Music. She has attended the International Musician’s Seminar at Prussia Cove\, Holland Music Sessions\, London Masterclasses and the Conservatoire Americaine at Fontainebleau\, France. She was chosen to play at masterclasses at the World Cello Congress III and the International Cello Festival in Manchester\, UK. \nJane lives with her husband\, Dan\, and daughter Aoife in Minneapolis.

The conversation will be moderated by Youa Vang followed by a Q&A to give attendees the opportunity to ask the artist questions. \nConversation moderated by Youa Vang \nEmerging at the dawn of the 2010s with her debut album Catching a Tiger\, Lissie defied easy categorization. A singer/songwriter with a gift for soft melodies and delicate surfaces who nevertheless demonstrated a quiet strength at her core\, Lissie is a native of the American midwest but found her greatest success in the U.K.\, which embraced not only Catching a Tiger but made her 2018 album\, Castles\, a Top Ten record nearly a decade later. Between those two albums\, Lissie didn’t sit still. She teamed with Jacknife Lee for the glossy 2013 set Back to Forever\, then began the process of stripping her music back to its emotional roots with 2016’s My Wild West\, a journey that reached its apex with Carving Canyons\, a 2022 album where she processed personal loss through the prism of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nYoua Vang is Vice President of RCHS. She is a freelance journalist in the Twin Cities for over 15 years and has written for The Current\, MSP Magazine\, MN Monthly\, Mn Artists and reports on music for MPR. In her free time\, she creates art with her sister under the name Third Daughter\, Restless Daughter. Vang lives in St. Paul with her family and their tiny dog. DESCRIPTION:  \nRussia-born pianist Ora Itkin began her piano studies at age four under the guidance of her father\, Igor Itkin\, who became known as one of the pioneers of subversive Russian jazz. She is a graduate of the Russian Academy of Music\, Moscow\, Russia; Tel-Aviv University\, Tel Aviv\, Israel; and Rubin Academy of Music at Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, Israel. In her musicianship she follows the legacy of her teachers who belong to the lineage of the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus school of piano playing. \nAn active concert pianist and chamber musician\, she performs in some of the major venues across the Twin Cities as well as internationally in Eastern and Central Europe\, the Middle East and the Caribbean. Ms. Itkin is a faculty member at both the Music Department of University of St. Thomas and MacPhail Center for Music. She also a founder of Reprise School of Piano and Musicianship in Saint Paul\, Minnesota and an artistic director of a multi-disciplinary music series entitled Muse Salon\, with successful programs since 2009 at The Schubert Club\, the Weisman Art Museum\, the University of Minnesota and the Alliance Française. For years Ms. Itkin was serving as the curator of a multilingual festival entitled Worlds between Words at the University of Minnesota. \nAs an educator and a life-long advocate of a holistic approach to learning\, Ms. Itkin seeks to promote an interconnectedness of music with the arts\, humanities\, and sciences in everything she does\, especially in her original multimedia productions ArtAffects\, cultural ambassadorship initiatives\, interdisciplinary seminars and presentations\, and individual work with students of all ages.

DESCRIPTION:Recomposing America is an initiative of the American Composers Forum that gives artists across Minnesota and throughout the United States the opportunity to offer their unique responses to the notion of “America”\, in alignment with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. On March 21\, Recomposing America artists and collaborative partners will convene at the Landmark Center to present their work\, explore their creative intersections\, and engage the broader Minnesota community. This convening will conclude with a pre-screening of Opus Cope: a new documentary exploring the relationship between composition and algorithmic intelligence\, preceded by a discussion about the film and its themes with filmmaker Jae Shim and ACF Executive Director Loki Karuna. \nFilmmaker Jae Shim strives to tell the truth no matter how challenging\, uncomfortable\, or unpopular it is to do so. As part of Recomposing America\, ACF will host public screenings and community conversations around Jae’s film “Opus Cope” prior to its release on PBS in Fall 2026. \nJae attributes his first encounter with the groundbreaking work of composer David Cope to a Radiolab episode titled “Musical DNA.” Jae immediately resonated with Cope’s defiant spirit\, challenging longstanding conventions of what classical music should look or sound like. Convinced there was more to the story\, he made repeated trips with his camera to the Santa Cruz-based composer. The resulting documentary takes viewers on a musical exploration of creativity according to Cope\, drawing from a lifetime at the intersection of art and technology. \nRegister here!

Kate Somvongsiri is a senior executive in international affairs with 25 years of development experience in Asia\, Africa\, and Eastern Europe. She was a career member of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Senior Foreign Service\, retiring in September 2025 from her last assignment as Mission Director for USAID Pakistan. Prior to that\, she served as the Mission Director in Tanzania (2021-23)\, Deputy Mission Director in Tanzania (2019–21)\, and Acting Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau of Democracy\, Conflict\, and Humanitarian Assistance (2017–19). Other postings include: Indonesia\, Afghanistan\, Ukraine\, and Washington. In recognition of sustained impact over her career\, she was awarded a Presidential Meritorious Rank Award by President Joseph Biden in 2024. \nPrior to USAID\, Ms. Somvongsiri served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Nepal\, volunteered with an NGO focused on Burmese migrant issues in Thailand\, and worked for the State Department’s Bureau of Democracy\, Human Rights\, and Labor. She holds a B.A. in Letters from the University of Oklahoma and an M.A. in international relations from Columbia University’s School of International and Public Affairs. She is a 2017 Distinguished Graduate of the National War College with an M.A. in National Security Strategy. SUMMARY:Schubert Club Courtroom Concert: Purple Orange – Michelle Kinney and Jacqueline Ultan
DESCRIPTION:  \nMichelle Kinney’s career began in Minneapolis\, MN\, when she returned home after receiving a BA in music from Northwestern University. During this early phase in her career\, she was recognized and frequently funded as a composer & cellist\, collaborating with Twin Cities choreographers (Laurie Van Wieren)\, filmmakers (Chris Sullivan\, Chicago) and theater artists (Michael Sommers)\, in addition to composing for her own new music ensembles (IMP ORK\, Aphid Bloodbath Consort). In 1989\, she moved to New York City to pursue an MA in Performance Studies at New York University. Michelle lived in NYC for 13 years\, recording and touring Europe and the US with several of her mentors; bridging musical genres and scenes\, from art music (Henry Threadgill\, Butch Morris\, Myra Melford)\, to pop (Sheryl Crow\, Natalie Merchant\, Lou Reed); and composing for dance (Cyrus Khambatta)\, film (Debra Dickson) and theater (Richard Schechner). \nMichelle returned to the Twin Cities in 2002\, to raise her young family. In addition to again becoming very actively engaged in the community as a composer and performer\, Michelle is the Musician in Residence for the Dance Program within the University of Minnesota’s Theater Arts and Dance Department. In this perfect “day job” for a musician/composer\, Michelle improvises compositions in daily dance classes\, with her cello played through a looping device. Each day Michelle spends hours reading bodies in motion as if they were sheet music\, spontaneously creating and layering multiple cello parts\, starting from a rhythmic foundation and building harmony\, texture and melodic phrasing. \nJacqueline Ultan is a singularly creative cellist\, composer and improvisor and has taught cello at MacPhail since 2000.With more than 20 years’ experience\, she teaches according to the needs of each individual student. Serious\, focused and detail oriented\, Jacqueline is also flexible and laid back. She stresses good physical form and relaxation and enjoys teaching many styles of music. She has also taught at Minneapolis Community and Technical College\, West Bank School of Music\, and Yale University. \nJacqueline’s unique versatility is reflected in the diversity of her artistic collaborations: urban groove trio Saltee; drum/cello quartet Purple Orange; Persion fusion trio Mirrorlands; pop band The Starfolk; improvising collective iNMiGRATiON; flute/cello duo J2J; world music trio Ottie The Mink and The Beatles tribute band The Shabby Road Orchestra. In demand locally and nationally\, Ultan has recorded and collaborated extensively with theater\, pop\, rock and new music artists\, including: Ondara\, Kill The Vultures\, Roma di Luna\, The Jayhawks\, Chan Poling\, Dan Wilson\, E. Carlos Nakai\, Huun Hur Tu\, The Jorgensens\, and Kevin Kling. \nShe has received several awards and commissions including a McKnight Performing Artist Fellowship; MacPhail Artist & Commissioning Grants; MRAC’s Next Step Grant and a State Arts Board Arts Tour MN grant. Ultan co-composed music for and participated in TED Talks Conferences in Minneapolis and L.A.\, and in June 2019\, co-wrote a duo cello score for Theater Latte Da’s production of ‘To Let Go And Fall’\, a play by Harrison Rivers. In October 2019\, Ultan participated in The Jazz In the City Festival in Salzburg\, Austria where she collaborated with Volker Goetz (composer/trumpet) and dance artist/choreographer Rosy Simas as well as Berlin based singer/composer Almut Kuhne\, cellist Chris Dahlgren and contemporary dance artist Nayana Keshava Bhat. \nJacqueline holds a Masters Degree in Performance from Yale University.

Ukrainian pysanky are celebrated for their fine\, lace‑like lines and layered dyes; Polish kraszanki emphasize natural dyes and simple\, earthy designs; Slovak and Czech eggs often feature floral motifs and bright\, cheerful palettes. SUMMARY:Schubert Club Courtroom Concert: Jennifer Kreider\, soprano & Andrew Sun\, piano
DESCRIPTION:  \nJennifer Kreider\, soprano\, is establishing herself as a performer of opera\, new music\, and song. Most recently\, Jennifer performed a concert of world premiere chamber works at the 2025 Aldeburgh Festival. In summer 2024 Jennifer was a Gerdine Young Artist with Opera Theater of Saint Louis where she performed the role of Sagredo and went on as a cover to sing the leading role of Maria Celeste in Philip Glass’ opera Galileo Galilei. In September 2024\, Jennifer was a Britten Pears Young Artist as part of the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme in England.  In competition\, Jennifer won second place in the Upper Midwest region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition after being named a winner of the Minneapolis district in 2023. At her alma mater\, Indiana University\, Jennifer premiered the featured role of Mrs. Frank in the world premiere production of Shulamit Ran’s and Charles Kondek’s opera Anne Frank. \nIn May of 2023\, Jennifer covered the role of Erika in Samuel Barber’s Vanessa at the Spoleto Festival\, USA in Charleston\, South Carolina. Jennifer was also a young artist at the CoOPERAtive Program in 2015 and 2018\, and at Opera in the Ozarks in 2019 where she sang the role of Musetta (LA BOHÈME) and covered Konstanze (DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL). Other performed roles include Pamina (Die Zauberflöte)\, Monica (THE MEDIUM)\, Ramiro (LA FINTA GIARDINIERA)\, Linfea (LA CALISTO)\, La Fée (CENDRILLON)\, Iolanthe (IOLANTHE)\, Nella (GIANNI SCHICCHI)\, Donna Elvira (act II of Don Giovanni)\, and Miss Jessel (TURN OF THE SCREW). \nJennifer is also well versed in art song and teaches Song Literature I and II for undergraduates at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. In 2016 she attended the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien\, Austria\, where she intensively studied and performed German Lieder with master teachers such as Elly Ameling\, Julius Drake\, and Roger Vignoles\, among several others. She is also especially passionate about the performance of new music — while studying at Rice University\, she performed regularly with Rice’s Hear & Now ensemble and the Rice Chamber Series. Highlights include Crumb’s Madrigal Book I and III\, String Quartet No. 2 by Schönberg\, Corigliano’s Mr. Tambourine Man: Seven Poems of Bob Dylan\, as well as several premiere works by young composers. \nIn addition to placing at the Upper Midwest Region of the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition in 2023\, she won the St. Louis district of the same competition in 2022. She also has had success as first place winner in her divisions at the Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota National Voice Competition in 2016 and the National NATS competition in Greensboro\, NC in 2015\, and was a finalist in the National Opera Association’s Dominick Argento and Carolyn Bailey Vocal Competition in 2019. Jennifer also won the Clifton Emerging Young Artist Award in 2016\, giving her the opportunity to perform Schubert’s Der Hirt auf dem Felsen at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia\, PA. Additional honors include receiving an Associate Instructorship at Indiana University and the prize for Best Supporting Actress in a Supporting Role for Musetta at Opera in the Ozarks. \n​Jennifer received her Artist Diploma in Solo Vocal Performance from Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music where she studied with Jane Dutton. Previously\, Jennifer attended Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music in Houston\, TX where she received her Master of Music under the guidance of Barbara Clark and Robin Rice\, and Westminster Choir College in Princeton\, NJ where she received her Bachelor of Music while working with Laura Brooks Rice. \nAndrew Sun is a Minneapolis-based pianist and arts administrator with a career that bridges performance\, education\, and nonprofit leadership. He has worked as an opera coach at NYU and the Manhattan School of Music\, and appeared in featured performances with Carnegie Hall Citywide and the Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concerts. He gave the world premiere of Ricky Ian Gordon’s song cycle Without Music in London\, UK and has performed locally with the Jungle Theater and St. Croix Valley Opera. At Minnesota Opera\, Andrew served as both a Resident Artist and later as Executive Manager\, blending artistic insight with organizational strategy. A Merola Opera Program and Music Academy of the West alum—and winner of the Marilyn Horne Song Competition—he now brings his passion for the arts and community-building to his role at the St. Paul Downtown Alliance\, supporting efforts to revitalize and reimagine the city’s urban core.

How exactly did that piece of wilderness transform into the village of emergence of that village in the early 1840s? The story of the founding of Saint Paul is not a simple one.
