SUMMARY:HORA: Egg Painting - A Folk Art Tradition
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Romanian American Cultural Center every Sunday in March for a special program exploring the rich world of Romanian egg painting\, a centuries-old folk art where wax\, color\, and symbolism transform fragile shells into vibrant expressions of identity and belief. Romanian artists are known for their intricate wax-resist techniques\, bold geometric patterns\, and deeply symbolic motifs that reflect themes of rebirth\, protection\, and continuity. \nAlongside these masterpieces\, the exhibit highlights other Eastern European traditions to show how regional styles share roots yet diverge in striking ways. Ukrainian pysanky are celebrated for their fine\, lace‑like lines and layered dyes; Polish kraszanki emphasize natural dyes and simple\, earthy designs; Slovak and Czech eggs often feature floral motifs and bright\, cheerful palettes. By comparison\, Romanian eggs stand out for their dense patterning\, strong contrasts\, and the unmistakable influence of regional folk embroidery and woodcarving. \nTogether\, these traditions reveal a shared cultural language expressed through color and symbol — yet each carries its own artistic fingerprint. Egg Painting: A Folk Art Tradition invites visitors to discover how a humble egg becomes a canvas for storytelling across Eastern Europe. \n

SUMMARY:RCHS History Revealed: Lissie
DESCRIPTION:History Revealed – Lissie\nPresented by Ramsey County Historical Society\nLandmark Center\, 75 West 5th Street\, Saint Paul\, MN 55102\nSuite 317\nWednesday\, March 11\, 2026\n6:00 PM-7:30 PM\nTickets – $25 \nRCHS is excited and honored to host Lissie for an evening of conversation revolving around her work in music and television. The conversation will be moderated by Youa Vang followed by a Q&A to give attendees the opportunity to ask the artist questions. \nConversation moderated by Youa Vang \nEmerging at the dawn of the 2010s with her debut album Catching a Tiger\, Lissie defied easy categorization. A singer/songwriter with a gift for soft melodies and delicate surfaces who nevertheless demonstrated a quiet strength at her core\, Lissie is a native of the American midwest but found her greatest success in the U.K.\, which embraced not only Catching a Tiger but made her 2018 album\, Castles\, a Top Ten record nearly a decade later. Between those two albums\, Lissie didn’t sit still. She teamed with Jacknife Lee for the glossy 2013 set Back to Forever\, then began the process of stripping her music back to its emotional roots with 2016’s My Wild West\, a journey that reached its apex with Carving Canyons\, a 2022 album where she processed personal loss through the prism of the COVID-19 pandemic. \nYoua Vang is Vice President of RCHS. She is a freelance journalist in the Twin Cities for over 15 years and has written for The Current\, MSP Magazine\, MN Monthly\, Mn Artists and reports on music for MPR. In her free time\, she creates art with her sister under the name Third Daughter\, Restless Daughter. Vang lives in St. Paul with her family and their tiny dog. She is currently working on her first book about how she connects to being Hmong as a first-generation immigrant.

SUMMARY:American Composers Forum: Recomposing America Minnesota Convening
DESCRIPTION:Recomposing America is an initiative of the American Composers Forum that gives artists across Minnesota and throughout the United States the opportunity to offer their unique responses to the notion of “America”\, in alignment with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. On March 21\, Recomposing America artists and collaborative partners will convene at the Landmark Center to present their work\, explore their creative intersections\, and engage the broader Minnesota community. This convening will conclude with a pre-screening of Opus Cope: a new documentary exploring the relationship between composition and algorithmic intelligence\, preceded by a discussion about the film and its themes with filmmaker Jae Shim and ACF Executive Director Loki Karuna. \nFilmmaker Jae Shim strives to tell the truth no matter how challenging\, uncomfortable\, or unpopular it is to do so. As part of Recomposing America\, ACF will host public screenings and community conversations around Jae’s film “Opus Cope” prior to its release on PBS in Fall 2026. \nJae attributes his first encounter with the groundbreaking work of composer David Cope to a Radiolab episode titled “Musical DNA.” Jae immediately resonated with Cope’s defiant spirit\, challenging longstanding conventions of what classical music should look or sound like. Convinced there was more to the story\, he made repeated trips with his camera to the Santa Cruz-based composer. The resulting documentary takes viewers on a musical exploration of creativity according to Cope\, drawing from a lifetime at the intersection of art and technology. \nRegister here!

SUMMARY:Schubert Club Courtroom Concert: Purple Orange – Michelle Kinney and Jacqueline Ultan
DESCRIPTION:  \nMichelle Kinney’s career began in Minneapolis\, MN\, when she returned home after receiving a BA in music from Northwestern University. During this early phase in her career\, she was recognized and frequently funded as a composer & cellist\, collaborating with Twin Cities choreographers (Laurie Van Wieren)\, filmmakers (Chris Sullivan\, Chicago) and theater artists (Michael Sommers)\, in addition to composing for her own new music ensembles (IMP ORK\, Aphid Bloodbath Consort). In 1989\, she moved to New York City to pursue an MA in Performance Studies at New York University. Michelle lived in NYC for 13 years\, recording and touring Europe and the US with several of her mentors; bridging musical genres and scenes\, from art music (Henry Threadgill\, Butch Morris\, Myra Melford)\, to pop (Sheryl Crow\, Natalie Merchant\, Lou Reed); and composing for dance (Cyrus Khambatta)\, film (Debra Dickson) and theater (Richard Schechner). \nMichelle returned to the Twin Cities in 2002\, to raise her young family. In this perfect “day job” for a musician/composer\, Michelle improvises compositions in daily dance classes\, with her cello played through a looping device. Serious\, focused and detail oriented\, Jacqueline is also flexible and laid back. She stresses good physical form and relaxation and enjoys teaching many styles of music. She has also taught at Minneapolis Community and Technical College\, West Bank School of Music\, and Yale University. \nJacqueline’s unique versatility is reflected in the diversity of her artistic collaborations: urban groove trio Saltee; drum/cello quartet Purple Orange; Persion fusion trio Mirrorlands; pop band The Starfolk; improvising collective iNMiGRATiON; flute/cello duo J2J; world music trio Ottie The Mink and The Beatles tribute band The Shabby Road Orchestra. Carlos Nakai\, Huun Hur Tu\, The Jorgensens\, and Kevin Kling. \nShe has received several awards and commissions including a McKnight Performing Artist Fellowship; MacPhail Artist & Commissioning Grants; MRAC’s Next Step Grant and a State Arts Board Arts Tour MN grant.

SUMMARY:Landmark Literati: Saints and Sinners - The Pioneers of Saint Paul
DESCRIPTION:Landmark Literati will welcome local author Gary Brueggemann on Wednesday\, April 8th for a discussion on history and curiosity. He will speak on his recently published book\, Saints and Sinners: The Pioneers of Saint Paul at 12pm at Landmark Center. Bring a lunch\, or get one from Jenni’s café on the first floor of Landmark Center! \n“Two hundred years ago the site of Saint Paul was a remote wilderness inhabited by a band of hunters and gatherers from the Mdewakaton Dakota tribe\, whose bark lodges stood on the shores of a backwater lake\, three miles below the distinctive white sandstone bluffs marking one of the Upper Mississippi’s great picturesque river bends. How exactly did that piece of wilderness transform into the village of emergence of that village in the early 1840s? The story of the founding of Saint Paul is not a simple one. This book reveals the fascinating saga of a developing pioneer America and of the intricate beginnings of a place called Minnesota.” \nAuthor of Minnesota’s Oldest Murder Mystery: The Case of Edward Phalen St. Paul’s Unsaintly Pioneer will share how the research into that book left tendrils of curiosity that prompted a 10 year journey of research and discovery that opened more doors to getting a better picture of what life was like for those early pioneers\, both well known\, and lesser known and how they all came together to pave the path into what St. Paul is today. \nThis event is free and open to the public

SUMMARY:Schubert Club Courtroom Concert: Alma Brasiliera
DESCRIPTION:  \nMinnesota-based musicians Cléa Galhano (recorder) and Joan Griffith (guitar and cavaquinho) perform a vibrant Brazilian repertoire\, highlighting diverse musical styles shaped by African and Portuguese influences. \nBrazilian recorder player Cléa Galhano is an internationally renowned performer of early\, contemporary and Brazilian music. \nGalhano has performed in the United States\, Canada\, South America and Europe as a chamber musician\, collaborating with recorder player Marion Verbruggen\, Jacques Ogg\, Belladonna\, Lanzelotte/Galhano Duo and  Kingsbery Ensemble. As a featured soloist\, Galhano has worked with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra\, New World Symphony\, Musical Offering and Lyra Baroque Orchestra. \nAmong other important music festivals\, Ms. Galhano has performed at the Boston Early Music Festival\, the Tage Alter Music Festival in Germany and at Wigmore Hall in London\, Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall and Merkin Hall in New York and Palazzo Santa Croce in Rome\, always receiving acclaimed reviews. Ms. Galhano was featured in 2006 in the Second International Recorder Congress in Leiden\, Holland in 2007 and 2013 at the International Recorder Conference in Montréal and in 2012 at the ARS International Conference\, Portland\, Oregon. \nShe gave her Weill Hall at Carnegie Hall debut in May 2010 and her second Weil Hall recital on December 2013 with the international Cuban guitarist Rene Izquierdo. \nGalhano studied in Brazil at Faculdade Santa Marcelina\, the Royal Conservatory (The Hague)\, and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston\, earning a LASPAU\, Fulbright Scholarship and support from the Dutch government. As an advocate of recorder music and educational initiatives\, she served for six years on the national board of the American Recorder Society\, and is the Music Director of the Recorder Orchestra of the Midwest. Ms. Galhano recently received the prestigious 2013 McKnight fellowship award\, MSAB Cultural collaborative and MSAB Arts Initiative. \nCurrently\, she is a faculty member at Macalester College\, Music Director of the Recorder Orchestra of the Midwest\, and has being recently appointed Adjunct Lecturer in Music\, Recorder at HPI\, Jacobs School of Music\, IU. \nMs. Galhano has recordings available on Dorian\, Ten Thousand Lakes and Eldorado label and she is the recipient of the National Arts Associate of Sigma Alpha Iota. \nJoan Griffith never met a string instrument she didn’t like. Growing up in Bellevue\, Nebraska\, she fell in love with the guitar while listening to Stan Getz and João Gilberto on their breakout Brazilian album. She immediately got her mother to purchase the record and\, at age 14\, proceeded to figure out how to play all the songs! “This is what I thought the guitar should sound like” she remembers. \nJoan went to the Conservatory at the University of Kansas City because it was one of the few schools that offered a guitar major. While she was there\, she met another string instrument\, the acoustic bass\, and a whole new world of music opened to her. From there\, the electric bass was soon introduced and she and friends from the Conservatory formed a disco/rock cover band called Airhart. Also in Kansas City\, she was a part of the influential Women’s Jazz Festival. Her love of jazz was a constant\, and became an integral part of her early professional working years. \nAfter a musical stint in Arkansas\, touring the state with a flute player\, she moved to the Twin Cities in 1987\, becoming an active player in the jazz/jobbing scene. As one of the all-woman trio\, Naima\, Joan and her band mates made their mark in the mostly male jazz scene\, garnering honors and rave reviews. Joan also became a part of the musical theater world where her ability to play both bass and guitar fit in nicely. The Children’s Theater\, the Guthrie\, Theater Mu\, Park Square and Bloomington Civic Theater (now known as Artistry) all were glad to have her in the pit. She has also played frequently with the Minnesota Orchestra. \nIt was at the Children’s Theater that a mandolin part was included as a double with the guitar book. Never having played one before\, she looked it over for a minute or two and promptly ripped off a few scales. The mandolin surrendered. She has since added the violin to her string resume. Joan has also followed her composer voice’s calling. This is where her first love\, the music of Brazil\, is her biggest influence. As one can hear on her recordings\, the choros\, the bossas\, the baiãos and the sambas live deeply in her soul. A visiting friend\, a Brazilian guitarist\, said “Joan plays Brazilian music without an accent.” Passing on her love of music\, Joan has taught at the University of St. Thomas and St. Catherine’s University among other schools. She is currently ensconsed at Macalester College. She is a roster artist with COMPAS and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
