SUMMARY:MSP International Film Festival: Alegría
DESCRIPTION:MSP Film Society presents the 41st Annual Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF41) from Thursday\, May 5 through Thursday\, May 19\, 2022. The MSPIFF41 theme\, SHINE THROUGH\, invites us all to resume gathering in-person to enjoy more than 200 films from around the world and a full array of exciting parties\, panels\, and filmmaker networking events and discussions. Many MSPIFF41 films will also be available to screen virtually\, in keeping with MSP Film Society’s mission to increase audience access to these wonderful films. FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE FESTIVAL HERE. \n \nAlegría is a proudly independent woman\, living in the family’s ancestral home in the Spanish city of Melilla nestled on the Moroccan coast. When her niece is set to marry\, Alegría reluctantly agrees to host the event. Supported by Dunia\, her bubbly Moroccan housekeeper\, and Marian\, her chill Christian best friend\, Alegría must open her home and revisit her Jewish roots. \nControl is a guiding principle in Alegría’s life\, and the chaos of the wedding and all its attendant rituals–not to mention a hopeful reunion with her daughter\, absent now for 5 years–leaves her feeling adrift. But Alegría has friends\, she has family\, and even after a rocky start\, the love and respect begins to shine through as she begins to embrace her family’s Jewish past. Violeta Salama\, with her directing debut\, makes the city of Melilla (where she grew up) as much a part of this family as the characters themselves.

SUMMARY:CHOICE Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks - The Learning Tree
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE \nSoulTouch Productions and Landmark Center\, in partnership with Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival (MSPIFF)\, present “CHOICE Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks”\, a screening of films by legendary artist Gordon Parks. The selection of films includes Half Past Autumn at 1 pm on Saturday\, May 7; The Learning Tree at 3 pm on Sunday\, May 8; and Leadbelly at 7 pm on Friday\, May 13\, shown = in Landmark Center’s F. K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium. \nEach screening will be followed by conversations with special guests from the Black community of filmmakers to examine the themes of the films and how they are relevant in the Black community today. Actor Kyle Johnson is the special guest for the post-film discussion of The Learning Tree. \nAbout The Learning Tree \nAs an African-American teen in small-town Kansas in the 1920s\, Newt Winger (Kyle Johnson) largely shrugs off the racial prejudice of his time and place. His calm and self-controlled perspective is in direct opposition to that of his quick-tempered friend\, Marcus Savage (Alex Clarke). But when Marcus‘ father\, Booker (Richard Ward)\, murders a man — and Newt witnesses the crime — Newt realizes that going to the police could jeopardize both his friendship and his life. \nActor Kyle Johnson\, the special guest for post-screening discussion of The Learning Tree\, has appeared in multiple TV shows such as The Fugitive (1963-1967) and Mod Squad (1968-1973). He played the son of Simon of Cyrene in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) and appeared in Pretty Maids All in a Row (1971) and Brother on the Run (1973). His most notable performance is from The Learning Tree\, where he portrayed Newt Winger\, a young Black man attempting to adhere to his morals through the experience of racial injustice. \nAbout Gordon Parks \nGordon Parks’ films are recognized for their cultural significance and present positive and powerful media representation of young Black men. Parks used his camera as his “weapon” of choice to fight poverty and racism. His work not only gave the rest of the world a glimpse into the life of a person of color\, but offered hope\, choice\, opportunity\, and a platform to many in the Black community. As a nationally recognized photographer\, musician\, writer\, and film director\, Gordon Parks’ influence has extended through multiple generations and throughout our nation\, beginning in St. Paul with his skill in photography. \nThis series will honor Gordon Parks’ legacy\, his choice to use film and photography to portray the Black experience and be a catalyst for societal change. It will feature themes that remain relevant today\, including mass incarceration\, racism\, and coming of age. For many in the Black community\, it will be an opportunity to feature stories and narratives not often seen or represented in the mainstream\, while for non-Black communities\, it will further the understanding of the Black experience\, break down barriers and stereotypes\, and provide a fuller context to Parks’ work. \n“Choice Cinema Series: In the Footsteps of Gordon Parks” is supported by the Saint Paul Cultural Star Program. For more information on the series\, visit the CHOICE Cinema page at landmarkcenter.org or call 651.292.3063.

SUMMARY:CARE Arts Engagement: Reimagining Justice
DESCRIPTION:Andrew Young\, Landmark Center’s 2021-2022 CARE Artist-in-Residence\, invites you to explore Landmark Center like you never have before while answering the question: What is beyond the five senses? \nAt this arts engagement\, Andrew Young asks participants to explore the sense of justice.  What does justice look like to you? Share a story\, either orally or written\, about an injustice you’ve experienced in your life\, small or large\, and what justice looks like to you for that situation. The story sharing and Andrew’s activities for the arts engagement provide an opportunity for healing and reconciliation. The stories will be collected and shared (with consent) at Landmark Center. Additionally\, you’ll have the chance to create an effigy representing injustice out of clay\, and then smash it with a giant gavel. This art engagement is being held before the film screening of CHOICE Cinema series’ Half Past Autumn: The Life and Works of Gordon Parks\, which addresses the racism and adversity Mr. Parks overcame in his life’s works. Come for the art engagement and stay for the film! Click here for more details on obtaining tickets to the CHOICE Cinema series. \nSense explored: Justice \nReservations encouraged\, walk-ins welcome! Reserve your tickets here.

SUMMARY:13th Italian Film Festival of Minneapolis / St. Paul: L'avventura
DESCRIPTION:Monica Vitti\, an icon of Italian cinema for generations\, passed away on February 2\, 2022 at the age of ninety. IFF is proud to pay tribute to this incredibly talented actress with the screening of L’avventura by Michelangelo Antonioni\, the film that made Vitti a star. \nAn iconic piece of challenging 1960s cinema and a gripping narrative on its own terms\, L’avventura concerns the enigmatic disappearance of a young woman during a yachting trip off the coast of Sicily\, and the search taken up by her disaffected lover (Gabriele Ferzetti) and best friend (Monica Vitti\, in her breakout role). Antonioni’s controversial international sensation is a gorgeously shot tale of modern ennui and spiritual isolation. \nL’avventura won the Special Jury Prize in Cannes in 1960 “for the beauty of its images\, and for seeking to create a new film language”. \nPurchase tickets here: https://prod3.agileticketing.net/WebSales/pages/info.aspx?evtinfo=724129~163a5c15-c3ae-4635-ba12-bbe995cbeb29&epguid=a64d8ebe-c08c-4ff9-af94-7bbfd5c7b291&
