SUMMARY:History Play: Alvin Karpis: The Last Public Enemy #1
DESCRIPTION:Alvin “Creepy” Karpis was the last 1930’s gangster to be named Public Enemy #1 by the FBI; the last major gangster to be captured; the only person ever arrested by J. Edgar Hoover and the only gangster chained to a radiator “like an animal” in Landmark Center. The play explores the life of Alvin Karpis\, the Barker-Karpis gang and infamous kidnappings\, how corruption helped his gang to be so successful and how he was finally brought to face justice in the Federal Courthouse in St. Paul. \nLandmark Center’s History Play performance series is a theater program designed to bring to life many of the trials\, court decisions\, legal ramifications\, and other related events that were relevant to Landmark Center when it was the Federal Courts Building. Noted Twin Cities judges\, legal practitioners\, and academics often trade robes for costumes to bring the events to life.

SUMMARY:Richard Cottle: Life in the Abstract Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Minnesota Landmarks is pleased to present the art of Richard Cottle. Cottle’s works are figure-based abstractions\, influenced by the work of Abstract Expressionist Willem de Kooning. Cottle works from black and white figure sketches and\, with the addition of a mixture of primary colors (red\, yellow and blue)\, he creates vibrant energetic compositions. In his recent work\, he has explored the concept of adding a second or third figure to create a visual and psychological tension between the figures and the viewer.

SUMMARY:Sound Sculpture: Free Visiting Hours
DESCRIPTION:Schubert Club’s historic 140th season kicks off with the multi-sensory installation Sound Sculpture\, a musical instrument made up of illuminated building blocks\, at Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul. On Saturday September 24\, the dynamic site-specific sound and light environment will be open to the public in the Landmark Center Cortile from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. for visitors to explore\, play\, and create music. \nSound Sculpture uses 25 location-aware blocks\, each cube representing a note in spatial dimension and time. The public’s interaction and placement of the cubes creates musical structures. Imagine walking onto the staff paper\, picking up the notes and moving them around\, thereby changing pitch\, rhythm\, melody and harmony. In this way\, participants can create physical and sonic structures together with Sound Sculpture.

SUMMARY:Landmark Live: Ray Bonneville
DESCRIPTION:Landmark Center presents “Landmark Live” in the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Auditorium. Presented with support from Minnesota Music Coalition\, KFAI Radio\, and the Pioneer Press these concerts begin at 8 pm and are preceded by a cocktail hour at 7 pm\, giving audiences an opportunity to enjoy complimentary refreshments and a cash bar. \nTickets are $20 in advance/$25 at the door and $70 for full season tickets. Tickets include admission to the cocktail hour from 7-8 pm. \n7pm – Cocktail hour // 7:30 pm – seating opens // 8 pm – Concert \n____ \nAcclaimed raconteur Ray Bonneville strips his bluesy Americana down to its essentials and steeps it in the humid grooves of the South\, creating a compelling poetry of hard living and deep feeling. His ninth release\, At King Electric\, delivers more than his trademark grit and groove. Songs such as “The Next Card to Fall” and “Codeine” gleam with intimate narratives of characters reaching for hope and wrestling with despair. Rich guitar and harmonica lines resonate over spare but spunky rhythms\, while Bonneville’s deep\, evocative voice confesses life’s harsh realities. \nJim Withers (Montreal Gazette) describes his sound as “folk-roots gumbo… a languid Mississippi Delta groove\, seasoned with smooth\, weathered vocals and a propulsive harmonica wheeze.” Whether performing solo or fronting a band\, playing electric or acoustic guitar\, Bonneville allows space between notes that adds potency to every chord\, lick\, and lyric. Thom Jurek (Allmusic.com) remarks\, “With darkness and light fighting for dominance… he’s stripped away every musical excess to let the songs speak for themselves.”

SUMMARY:North Gallery: Robert "Bob" Brown Exhibit Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Ramsey County Historical Society\, in partnership with Landmark Center\, will premiere an exhibition featuring local artist Robert Brown (1893-1954). While there are few known details of his life\, we do know he studied briefly in Europe and New York City before settling in St. Paul\, where he worked as an artist in the 1930s and ’40s. He painted\, mostly watercolors\, in the regionalist style promoted by the Federal Art Project (FAP). The FAP provided work and a basic income to a few thousand American artists and artisans during the Great Depression. Most of Brown’s known works are St. Paul urban scenes and landscapes. \nAdditional exhibition programming will include a walkthrough with local historian\, Paul Nelson\, who has written a retrospective of Brown and discovered images of many artworks that have not been seen in nearly 100 years. Look for the article “Bob Brown: Paint What You See” in the upcoming Summer 2022 issue of Ramsey County History magazine in late mid-late August.
