With permission from Ramsey County Historical Society, this tour will explore the geological and architectural uniqueness of downtown St. Paul’s stone buildings. Most of the stone used in these buildings were sourced from quarries outside of the St. Paul area, with many being from the Midwest. Every stone carries an ancient story, and every building – a human creation of imagination and toil. This tour will bring to light a few fragments of these stories, where the stone of the earth came together with human ingenuity in architecture and craft. This tour concentrates on Landmark Center and the surrounding neighborhood.

Stroll through one of St. Paul’s oldest public parks: Rice Park, located in the heart of the cultural district in downtown. Flanked by architectural and cultural giants: Landmark Center, the Saint Paul Hotel, the Central Library, and the Ordway, this park is beloved as an oasis of green space, beautiful landscaping, and as a site for public art and performances. Check out our Summer Nights in Rice concert schedule. Two of our tours coincide with the concert schedule and will end just as the music begins.

For more than 60 years in downtown Saint Paul, the US Government made its home in the Federal Building, now knows as Landmark Center. In conjunction with America’s 250th, this tour will highlight the federal agencies that called this historic and formidable building home. Whether you were here to mail a letter, take the oath of citizenship, or settle disputes, all were once handled within these granite walls.

Enjoy a rare opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes exploration of Landmark Center’s North Tower. Get a bird’s eye view of downtown Saint Paul by climbing the steps and walking through a secret door to get to the top. This is the one rooftop you don’t want to miss this summer. Don’t forget your camera!
The North Tower is only accessible via stairs, 61 steps total from the 6th floor landing to the top. Or skip the elevator all together and climb the 198 stairs from the first floor.
