OPENING RECEPTION: XV Latvian Song and Dance Festival Art Exhibition | Mākslas Rija | Artists from the US and Latvia

June 2, 2022 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Join gallery and festival organizers for an opening reception on June 2 from 5-7 pm in the North Gallery. In conjunction with the Latvian Song and Dance Festival, Landmark Center and the Festival are co-hosting an exhibit to celebrate Latvian visual arts!

The art exhibition will take place in the North Gallery from June 2-July 3. The Twin Cities were the long-time home of world-renowned expressionist painter Jānis Kalmīte. He is best known for his iconic paintings of “rijas,” or “threshing barns,” that played a central role for Latvian homesteads and farm families for generations. This exhibition encompasses the idea of “place” within works of art created by American Latvian artists in recent years in both daily and cultural life. The exhibit is a juried show that includes paintings, drawings, graphics, photographs, and sculpture; including Latvian artists from across the US, and even from Latvia.

Mākslas Rija is open during Landmark Center’s normal business hours.

  • Monday-Friday, 8 am – 5 pm
  • Thursday, 8 am – 8 pm
  • Saturday, 10 am – 5 pm
  • Sunday, 12 – 5 pm

The Latvian art exhibit is one of several festival events organizers are presenting in Landmark Center during the Festival. This year’s festival will mark the first time in its 70-year history that it has taken place in Minnesota.
